We started Inkling almost five years ago with a vision for reinventing the textbook. The iPad had not yet launched, Android was barely a blip in the market, and the most popular apps were games for your iPhone 3. Since then, we’ve built the best reading experience for iPads, iPhones, and the web. Just as important, we’ve created the tools as part of our cloud publishing platform to let professionals build beautiful, device-agnostic content at scale.

As part of this journey, we were excited to launch our first native Android app earlier this month, thereby opening up the world’s best reading experience to Android’s 800 million global users. It was our single most frequent product request, so we invested a lot of time and care into making a beautiful, native experience that was calibrated for the Android platform. Launching the beta version of Inkling for Android was a big milestone for us: with a reader experience for iOS, Android, Mac and PC, Inkling is truly platform-agnostic. Now, all content produced on our cloud publishing platform is available anywhere.

But the Android launch is more than just a new app. For our partners in the publishing world, this launch signals our broader commitment to universal distribution for any content produced on our platform. From native experiences for mobile devices to tried-and-true channels like Kindle, iBooks, or even print, we want content developers to create content once in Inkling Habitat and then publish it anywhere their customers are.

It sounds simple, but it’s a huge pain point for the industry. Publishers everywhere are struggling with how to stay ahead of the explosion of mobile devices over the last five years.
