Ask an Inkblot: Gavin Schulz, Software Engineer

unnamed

Where are you from?

Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

Why did you join Inkling?

My first interaction with Inkling was watching Matt MacInnis share Inkling Habitat for the first time at O’Reilly’s Tools Of Change conference in 2012. Not only was it exciting from a technical perspective but it was the first tool I had seen that allowed anyone to build beautiful, interactive digital books without specialized knowledge.

What do you do?

I work on the Content Import & Export team. Our mission is to make it easy for users to import content into Habitat from a variety of formats and then, when they’re done authoring, enable them to one-click export their content to all the distribution channels that matter to them.

What has been your proudest moment at Inkling?

Our team recently released the first version of our export framework which allowed us to support many more distribution channels through one-click export. It was great to see the team come together and build a new service from scratch and deliver it on time.

What do you do in your spare time?

Since I read Modernist Cuisine at Home, I’ve started cooking much more often and expanding my knowledge of all things food. I also love watching hockey, especially the Toronto Maple Leafs!

What’s your favorite book?

My favourite book is Modernist Cuisine at Home. It was the cookbook that got me really excited about cooking not only because it demystified a lot of exotic techniques and ingredients but also because it takes a scientific approach to cooking allowing anyone to get excellent results every time.

What do you love about working at Inkling?

The people. I count it a privilege to spend my days working with the awesome team at Inkling who push me to do my best work while still making me laugh (a lot) along the way!
