Ask an Inkblot: Ollie Khakwani, UX Designer

Where are you from?

London, England

Why did you join Inkling?

Two reasons. First, I’m interested in interactive media and education, so it’s awesome working at a company at the intersection of the two. And second, everyone I met on the team was intimidatingly brilliant and I wanted to be around people like that.

What do you do?

I design new features in Habitat to make it easier to edit and publish content – usually that means and sketching, prototyping, and testing a load of ideas to figure out which ones are the best.

What has been your proudest moment at Inkling?

I was just working on a feature to improve the editing process. We were testing some of my designs with users and realized they were functional but didn’t solve for a bigger need, so instead of building and releasing what we had, we decided to go back and design a more flexible solution. I’m proud we decided not to build a partial fix and go back to the drawing board to build a better, fuller solution.

What do you do in your spare time?

Climbing and hanging from things–I love bouldering and aerial fabrics. I also do some illustration, and I’ve played music since I was a kid (guitar, drums, piano… I’m trying to find an accordion or harp to learn next).

What’s your favorite book?

Miranda July’s short story collection, No One Belongs Here More Than You.

What do you love about working at Inkling?

How smart everyone here is, and how much they care about making the product as good as possible. I get tons of feedback on ideas that reframes problems in ways I never would have thought of. I feel like I’ve learned more in the month that I’ve been here than I do in most years.
